who are the satellite sisters?

The Satellite Sisters are five real sisters: Julie, Liz, Sheila, Monica and Lian Dolan. After growing up in the same Connecticut house with two parents, three brothers and one black lab, they went off to lead very different adult lives, only to come back together in their 30’s and 40’s to create The Satellite Sisters. The Dolan sisters have been married, single and divorced. They have older kids, little kids and no kids. They have worked as teachers and nurses, Fortune 500 business leaders and major university admissions directors, school auction chairwomen and team moms. They are news junkies, People Magazine subscribers and lovers of great books. They have lived in big cites and small towns, in America and abroad. It is these lives and experiences and knowledge and opinions that the Satellite Sisters bring to their radio conversations every day from their posts in three very different cities.

News. Talk. Laughs. The Satellite Sisters tackle the world one cup of coffee at a time.

Who are the Satellite Sisters? Here they are, in birth order:

Julie Dolan, the oldest sister, is the foreign correspondent, the sister who has lived and worked in Moscow, Russia and Bangkok, Thailand. This year, she is relocating to the foreign land of Dallas, Texas. Before becoming an expatriate, Julie worked at and taught in a number of leading U.S. universities and business schools including UCLA, Stanford and Tulane. She has a degree in Government from Smith College and an MBA from Penn State. She is married and has two twenty-something sons. An empty-nester now, she thinks it is perfectly okay for parents to use GPS systems to track their children, no matter what their age.

Before creating and launching Satellite Sisters, Liz Dolan, the second oldest sister, was the Vice President of Global Marketing at NIKE, where she worked for a decade. She has twice been named Woman of the Year in the sports business. She quit her job at NIKE on her 40th birthday to go get a life. Instead, she has spent the years since then running Satellite Sisters Omnimedia (not the company’s real name – she just likes to dream.) She began her career in marketing, branding and communications after graduating with a degree in Comparative Literature from Brown University. Liz is single and lives in Santa Monica, California.

Sheila Dolan, the middle sister, has been an educator her entire career. She was a teacher and principal at several public elementary schools in New York City, one of which, Bridges, she co-founded under the city’s innovative small schools initiative. Most recently, she taught first grade in West Los Angeles. She holds a B.A. from Hunter College and two Masters Degrees in Education, which she charged on a now-defunct VISA card. Sheila is the official Satellite Sisters Entertainment Reporter, hosting her own “show within the show” called Entertaining Sheila. She lives in Santa Monica and is the mother of a twenty-something daughter.

Monica Dolan, the second youngest sister, has spent most of her career as an R.N. and Clinical Medical Researcher specializing in cardiac care. She has spent more than two decades in Intensive Care Units, Coronary Care Units, Operating Rooms and, most recently, FDA conference rooms, working on studies for approval of new medical devices. Monica leads many of the health and wellness discussions on Satellite Sisters and also has her own segment entitled “Science of the Obvious” in which she examines studies that come to such earth-shattering conclusions as “Teens’ Brains May Not Be Ready To Make Good Decisions” and “Most Adult Women Do Not Get Enough Sleep.” She has a B.S. from Georgetown, is single and lives in Portland, Oregon, not far from the sisters’ parents.

Lian Dolan, the youngest sister, is a writer whose monthly column in Working Mother Magazine is called The Chaos Chronicles. Her work has been published in such magazines as in O, The Oprah Magazine and Good Housekeeping and she was the head sister and senior editor on Satellite Sister’s Uncommon Senses, the sisters’ memoir of growing up together which is in bookstores now. She has also been a sports film producer, an urban archeologist and a “cocktail tomato” at the Mangy Moose in Jackson, Wyoming. Lian is married with two school age sons. She lives in Pasadena, California. Her degree from Pomona College is in Classics, which comes in handy in Greek restaurants.
